One of the most notorious errors that affect PS4 consoles is error WS-37397-9. This issue is most commonly caused by an IP address being blocked because it violates PSN’s policy.

It is important to note that some solutions may work for certain users. Others won’t. Follow the steps below to fix this problem.

Some players suggested changing DNS settings to fix the error.

  1. Go to Settings > Network > Establish an Internet Connection.
  2. Select your network, go to Custom, and set for your primary DNS and for your secondary DNS.

Verify that the error does not persist. If so, you can try these steps:

  1. Navigate to Network Settings and choose Manual.
  2. Change MTU to 1473
  3. Restart your router/modem by turning off your PS4
  4. Check if the workaround worked.

3. Check that you are not in violation of PlayStation’s terms & conditions

As mentioned at the beginning, error WS-373397-9 can be caused by unintentional violation of PlayStation’s terms. This error is often caused by two things:

Shared IP Address

Multiple users should not share the same IP addresses. After unplugging your router/modem, wait five minutes before plugging it back in. Contact your ISP if the problem persists.

You can find out more about your router’s setup page.

Go to WAN configuration > IP Address. If you see an IP address there, it means your IP has been blocked. You can change your MAC address manually.

  1. Navigate to Internet Setup or a similar page and then to MAC options.
  2. Choose the option that allows for you to manually change your MAC address and then change the last digit. Now your IP address should be set to zero (zero).
  3. Go back to the page where you can set up the MAC address.
  4. Select Default MAC at this point.
  5. Check if the problem persists by restarting your PS4.

Malware may have altered network settings to prevent you from connecting if it infects your system.

To detect and remove malware, scan your network, router, computer, and any other equipment.

This annoying error was encountered by many PS4 owners. They contacted PS Support. You can find more information from a Redditor.

After a phone conversation with a more tech-savvy PlayStation support representative, it was clear that the problem is so widespread due to Sony’s draconian security measures for PSN. My home network could have been infected with malware, which was sending suspicious traffic back to my PSN every time I tried to log into. Sony immediately bans the source IP to protect against a large-scale attack. Even if the malware was isolated (easily protected against) and not part a larger DDoS threat, it is still banned.

Redditor added:

[…] Even if you change your IP or purchase a static one, there is no guarantee you won’t get blocked again if the malware is present in your network. To get rid of the malware, scan your network and clean all devices.

This Redditor pointed out that it is unlikely that Sony will change these security precautions anytime soon. To avoid large-scale attacks on PSN, the company prefers to keep things safe. Sony lost millions as a result of the downtimes.
