How to Reset C by GE Smart Bulb: Step by Step

3 Mins read

C by GE was one of the first smart bulb brands to reach our homes. It offered its products under many different names throughout history.

It has a long history and a few new features. For example, the “Made for Google” label (which signifies that C by GE can easily connect to any Google speaker or home).

The new C smart bulbs products seem to have many problems in day-to-day operation.

The majority of bulbs have defects like;

  • Voice command not being received by C by GE bulb
  • C by GE bulb app unable connect to the bulb
  • After an update, smart bulb becomes unresponsive quickly

These issues can be solved by factory setting the C-by-GE bulb. This same procedure can be used for any smart strip of light from C by GE.

C by GE’s reset process is, to be honest with you, quite difficult. Despite the company’s long history, its technological side is still lacking flexibility.

Let’s see how to factory reset a C-by-GE smart bulb.

How do I reset C by GE Smart Bulb

C by GE’s reset process is completely dependent on a sequence. This sequence consists of turning the bulb ON and off within a given time. This process must be repeated at least 8 times to activate the reset function.

Step 1 – You must turn off the light first. Use the wall switch to turn off your light. The C by GE app switch should not be used. Your smart bulb must be turned off for five seconds.

Step 2 Turn on your smart light bulb for 8 seconds. You can count the exact seconds using any stopwatch, such as Mississippi 1.. Mississippi 2..etc

Step 3 Next, turn off your smart light bulb for 2 more seconds.

Step 4 : You will need to repeat the process (step 2 & step 3) at least five more times. The C by GE bulb should then start flashing. The light will flash three times if everything went well. If the light doesn’t flash, it means that you missed a step or a time period. You will need to repeat the entire process.

This is the complete process:

  1. Start at the turn-off stage
  2. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  3. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  4. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  5. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  6. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  7. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  8. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  9. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  10. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  11. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  12. Turn on the bulb and it should blink 3 times.

Step 5 Sometimes it may seem like it isn’t working, even if you repeat the process several times. If this is the case, it’s likely that you have an older version of C by GE bulbs. Two additional steps are required to upgrade the firmware version of 2.7 and earlier bulbs.

This means that you will need to repeat the steps 6 times, not 5 times. This will also work for older bulbs.

Then, the updated total process is as follows:

  1. Start at the turn-off stage
  2. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  3. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  4. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  5. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  6. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  7. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  8. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  9. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  10. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  11. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  12. For 8 seconds, turn on the bulb
  13. For 2 seconds, turn off the bulb
  14. Turn on the bulb and it should blink 3 times.

This video will give you a better understanding of the process.

Why doesn’t my GE C lamp work?

Many reasons can cause C by GE smart bulb to become unresponsive. These include network instabilities, firmware upgrades, manufacturing defects, and other issues.

These issues can be addressed with three different solutions.

Solution 01

These steps can be used if your C-by-GE smart bulbs and light strips don’t work with your Cby GE app.

  1. Make sure that your lights are on.
  2. Next, turn on Bluetooth to your mobile phone.
  3. You should close your phone and smart lights.
  4. Turn off the smart light and turn it on to power cycle it. The wall power switch can be used.
  5. All the setup will be initiated after waiting 60 seconds
  6. You can now check the operation by speaking to your smart bulb.

Solution 02

These steps can be used if your smart bulb doesn’t respond to your Google Home or Google Speaker.

  1. Turn on everything to make sure it has power.
  2. Completely close the Google Home app (hard closing). These steps will allow you to hard close your Google Home app.
    1. Navigate to the menu from your mobile. Next, go to the settings
    1. You can then locate Apps and Notifications.
    1. Locate the Google Home App
    1. To stop the operation, click on the Force button
  3. You will now need to reboot all your Google devices. These are the steps to follow in order to do this.
    1. Open your google home app
    1. Next, go to the Settings section
    1. In the upper right corner, you will see three dots. Click it to select the restart option
  4. Wait for 3 seconds before connecting all devices.
  5. You can also test the operation by speaking to your smart C by GE bulb.

If all else fails, you can factory reset your device using the same procedure I described in the previous section.
